For your enjoyment, here are the first few pages of a screenplay I wrote some time ago now that fits these times. Patient Zero is a thriller set during a pandemic two minutes in the future.

It tells the story of Jorie Chester, a widely-travelled foreign correspondent who collapses on her return from her latest trip. Jorie is the new Typhoid Mary, the healthy carrier of a deadly disease. She coughs, you die.

Jorie is whisked away to a top-secret facility where she meets Dr. Will Brennan, who runs a cutting-edge research lab. As their attraction grows through the glass observation wall of her room, Will struggles to discover a treatment for the disease while Jorie fights for the rights of the people who contract it.

At the same time, the director of the facility secures funding for his expensive project from pharmaceutical companies wanting to harvest antibodies from Jorie’s unique immune system.

When a disease threatens the world, what are our rights worth, what is love worth, what is an individual worth? And what rides roughshod over them all?
